She the Bee Shop

Hi! I'm Krista Esken, owner and creator of She the Bee Shop. I design and make modern hand embroidery hoops and DIY embroidery kits. Grab your favourite bevvie, pull up a chair and I'll tell you all about what I do and why I do it!
Art, in its many forms, has always been a big part of my life. My dear old dad is an incredible musician and my sweet mom a talented knitter and sewer. Us kids were surrounded by creativity growing up and encouraged to express ourselves through music, visual and fibre arts. But, as it happens, my path didn't lead me into a career that involved creativity— at all, not one bit. And while I enjoyed what I was doing, I spent my free time creating, drawing, hand lettering, knitting, weaving, doing macrame. Making is where my heart wanted to be.
My discovery of modern embroidery happened quite by accident— I stumbled upon it one day. Staring at these delightful hoops and contemporary designs made me want to give it a try. And I am so glad that I did! It wasn’t long before I was HOOKED. Stitching up finished and custom embroidery combined my love of drawing, creating, colour, hand lettering and fibre arts all into one. My creative hobby slowly transformed into a little business and my shop was born! But what to call it…
The answer literally landed on our doorstep. A very weak little honeybee, barely moving, right there when we opened the door. We rushed sugar water to our little bee friend and watched her lap it up. A few minutes later, her little wings began to buzz and off she flew! We saved her! And since that little bee and our family were going to be forever connected, we thought we should give her a name. My four year old son's suggestion is the one that stuck— "She the Bee". I hear his excited little voice and think of 'our' bee every time I pick up my needle.
I am truly grateful and passionate about what I do. I enjoy creating both my own designs and custom pieces. Each design is hand drawn by me, with a special love for hand lettering and botanicals. And since sharing is caring, I also create DIY embroidery kits for anyone wanting to pick up a needle and give it a try! Want a little hands on instruction?
