Adam of Land and Sea Hair Company

My name is Adam Sharanewych and I am the founder of the Land and Sea Hair Company. My story begins a few years ago, as I was just starting at the University of Guelph. Like most teenagers I was struggling to find my style, especially when it came to my super flat, thin, and boring hair. I had suffered with bowl cuts, faux-hawks, and longer, Justin Bieber-esque hairstyles throughout my early and mid teens. Finally I came across a post online talking about sea salt spray and how it could give volume to flat hair without leaving it rock hard like gels. I was intrigued, so I headed to my local Shoppers and picked up a bottle!
Instantly I was hooked. By just spending an extra minute or two in the mornings I could get my hair to actually stay where I wanted it all day and leave it feeling soft to the touch. I finally had hair I loved. Unfortunately my favourite brand fell off the shelves and was left with a dilemma; do I try out one of the designer, expensive sea salt sprays loaded with alcohol and ingredients I couldn't pronounce— or do I try and make my own? I choose the latter and had no idea the adventure it would take me on.
I spent many months blending salts and oils to find just the perfect balance that gave you all the volume, texture, and styling abilities of the salt with just enough oil to keep your hair from drying and frizzing out. I found that using Himalayan Pink Salts would leave some undissolved micro-particles that mimicked the true feeling of swimming at the beach. After all, when you swim at the beach you always get a bit of sand and grit in your hair as well.
Coming from a family of entrepreneurs it wasn't long before I got the question, "So, when do you plan on selling it?" What did I know about selling hair styling products? I'm studying Software Engineering which just may be the furthest thing on earth away from it. But I figured I should give it a shot. Hey, what's the worst that could happen?
I’ve always been someone who is passionate about our environment and especially our oceans. I love spending time at the beach and surfing. So I figured if I am going to start a business, I’m going to use it to do good. Well, I had no idea the journey I was about to embark on. I thought sure, just mix up the ingredients, put it in a bottle, and sell it, right? Turns out starting a business is hard— like really, really hard. From the time I started working on Land and Sea, it took over a year before I made my first sale. Was it worth it? Absolutely.
I have learned so much in the process, from designing logos and packaging, to sourcing ingredients and manufacturing. I am so grateful for all the support I got along the way from family and friends, and couldn’t have done it without their support and motivation.
At Land and Sea the mission is to make people love their hair, and make a difference while doing it. Our Oceans are extremely important, both to me personally and of critical importance for us globally. That is why we pledge to use glass bottles to minimize plastic use and donate 10% of our profits to The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit that is using technology to combat ocean plastic pollution. We are cruelty free and Leaping Bunny Certified. Founded in Toronto, Canada, we may be a long way from the ocean but we hope to make a difference, and we will with your support!
