MAKER STORIES

Kiki Carr

The Nooks - March 17, 2020

I've always been a writer, I just haven't always been a public writer. In the past, when my writing was used in a commercial sense it was for my marketing and branding clients. I've always been an entrepreneur, I just haven't always built businesses for what brings me personal joy.

For me, writing is a creative and spiritual practice where every word is a piece of an interlocking tapestry. Putting pen to paper fuels me and the reader reaps those rewards. Pursuing being an author as a career has been an independent and elusive journey, but I'm happy to be on this wild ride.

When I allowed myself to exclusively do something that I love, doors started opening. Now, I get to write for my books, write on my personal blog, write for other businesses' blogs, writing articles for publications, and so on!

Being an author is an interesting world to navigate, as a duality between being a creative maker and an entrepreneur. Writing about personal development, mental health and mindfulness carries weight-- and knowing the responsibility I have to the reader is the driving force. The publishing world has been an eye-opening experience and a vulnerable endeavour. I knew that pursuing a career as an author had to start with a foundation, but where to begin? I found this through co-authorship and a community of women ready to share their stories as passionately as I was. I joined Unleashing Her Wild, a book about instinct and intuition. I loved the process so much that I created the concept, as well as became the lead author, for a group of women in the book She's No Longer Silent: A collection of journeys through mental illness, trauma, and gratitude (publishing fall 2020).

I started writing in co-authored books knowing that they were going to be my education, and now I'm excited to be in the midst of the first draft of my first solo book which is set to publish Summer 2020. This solo book, where I am crafting every single corner of every page with intention, is unlike any work I've ever created and brought to life. I haven't told anyone about it yet (except for you now reading this), which adds to my personal excitement. This summer, I will be hitting the outdoor markets with my vintage 1974 Volkswagen Beetle named The Paperbug, to "pop-up" as part of my book tour doing book signings! You can follow along at instagram.com/paperbug.

I am overjoyed to be proudly displaying my creative work in a community space like The Nooks amongst other like-minded passionate creators, where I can grow as an author and continue to launch new books in this open-armed opportunity.
